Would love to see Rouge do some more development over there - a few years ago I remember reading about them wanting to build a little arena across from their building on 5th for some of their athletic competitions. I believe 5th and 2nd Aves are the only 2 thoroughfares from one end of the neighborhood to the other. But man, 71 going straight through the neighborhood really hurts it. Milo Grogan is definitely interesting and makes too much sense having short north/Italian village on one side and downtown on the other. South High down by the Fort is also an interesting area that is rumored to be one of the next "hot spots", but anytime I'm down there I just can't get passed how industrial it all feels and the lack of walkabilty. Everything around the hospital and Livingston is and has been great and it's trickeling south - shout out to two dollar radio and Chef Hiro for their great vegan food! Would love to see more development getting into Hungarian village and reeb-hosack but I think it eventually gets there. I'd put some of the Parsons corridor in that group as well. All the major pieces are in place - still a few rough around the edges spots in each neighborhood but everything continues to get better year over year. The Bottoms was/is just a nickname that grew in the 80s/90s / early 2000s because of the neighborhoods proximity to the Hillltop and the poor economic status of many of its residents - from 1983 until the completion of the floodwall in 2004, new construction in the area was prohibited because FEMA determined nearly the entire neighborhood to be in a flood zone.īut I agree with most of the comments here, Franklinton and OTE are pretty much there. What’s next? All 86 apartments will be renovated, building by building, over the next 18-plus months. Thank you to everyone who’s worked on this development! This type of investment is important in creating affordable housing that endures.Ĭredit is due to many people, inside and outside Homeport, for this milestone, in particular Brenda Peterson and Josh Casper, Homeport’s development staff who work on the project Roy Lowenstein, Homeport’s development consultant CMHA, for choosing Homeport as its partner and the construction’s financiers, the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing, Lument, and Ohio Capital Finance Corporation. That keeps these apartments available to a wide range of people, all while their apartments’ physical condition dramatically improves. Thanks to Thornwood Commons’ legacy of ownership by CMHA, every family who lives there will pay no more than 30% of their household income toward rent. Thornwood Commons’ renovations include new windows, cabinets, flooring, more energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment, and much more. The closing is more like a new starting line for any project: After more than two years of planning, Thornwood Commons is ready to start construction. Homeport is excited to announce that in late June we closed on the construction financing for our next development, “Thornwood Commons.” Thornwood Commons is an important partnership with the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, to extensively renovate 86 apartments for families that were originally built in the mid-1950s in Columbus’ Milo-Grogan neighborhood.
